Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 Bookshelf Speaker Review

Sierra-1 Bookshelf Monitor Speakers

The Ascend Acoustic Sierra-1 monitor is a beautiful bookshelf speaker that can roar like a beast when it wants to. I say that because it is and frankly, that’s what it does best. But before I get into explaining the details of what one can expect, it should be known that David Fabrikant, the designer and head honcho of Ascend Acoustics, spent 4 and a half years developing the Sierra-1. David wanted to offer a truly reference-quality monitor that was neutral, linear, and had what so many monitors of its size lack, bass. And, he wanted to accomplish all this at an affordable price point.

Zealth Audio ZAL36T Loudspeaker Review

The Back Story

Doug is a pastor, so I think he is more predisposed to interesting background stories than I am. And thus, while going over our finds, likes, and dislikes at CES 2011, Doug mentioned there was a homeless guy here showing off his speakers. Homeless on a top floor of the Venetian, seriously? That sounds compelling. But what do the speakers sound like? Before telling me his impressions about their sound, Doug gave me the back ground story on Kevin. Kevin Nelson is homeless. He makes his way around the San Diego area keeping his gear at a friend’s home. He has been working on speaker designs since getting out of high school year ago, and the current speakers, being shown at CES, are the culmination of about 20 years of dreaming and tweaking. I can see why this grabbed Doug’s attention, but I was waiting for the catch. I don’t think Doug would waste my time if the speakers sounded awful, even though his taste are fairly different than mine, he does have a well trained ear. So, how do they sound, I kept asking. But the story kept getting richer. I think being a pastor teaches one to be a good story teller, because Doug dropped the bomb when he said that each speaker played both channels and they had a huge planar like sound. And they only cost $890. Hook, line, sinker, I was hooked. I had to hear this. So by day four, after finally finding the room in the chaos that is the upper floors of the Venetian Hotel during CES, I sat there with my wife for a couple minutes stunned. Were both speakers really playing both left and right channel, how was this possible, why wasn’t it a big mess of sounds? I quickly made plans to demo these speakers at my place.

Rythmik Audio FV15HP Servo Controlled Subwoofer Review

The Rythmik Audio FV15HP subwoofer sports a 15″ high excursion servo controlled driver mounted in a large vented box with a powerful 600 watt (continuous output) rated amplifier. Powerful, rich, deep and solid with true 20Hz extension is how I would describe the bass output of this sub. Rythmik Audio has a very talented engineering staff that produced a truly great high caliber subwoofer product at a very affordable asking price. I would recommend a pair of these subs for any upscale home theater environment where seat to seat bass consistency and ultimate output are paramount concerns. It’s loud, clean, and fast… and for most – that’s going to make this an extremely hard sub to beat.

Empirical Audio Overdrive USB DAC Review

Shared Review with Dagogo.com

By Ed Momkus

About a year ago I embarked on what has been an absolutely fabulous journey into computer-based digital audio, culminating in what can only be described as a transformation of my main audio system. Along the way I have received quite an education. That education included learning a bit about setting up your own server, listening to some of the most sought-after DACs on today’s market and understanding the benefits of battery-powered digital. I’m not going to regurgitate all of that in this article, as that would take way too long. Rather, I’m going to talk about an acoustically fabulous set of products that have been central to my education. They are from a small, relatively unknown company – Empirical Audio.

Axiom M3v3 Bookshelf Speaker Review

If you have ever browsed AudioReview.com you surely must have seen the ads for Axiom Audio speakers. I have, I see the ads all the time. So I emailed Axiom and asked, “Can you send me a pair to review?” I sit here every day looking at these speakers and haven’t really had a good chance to hear them.

Axiom quickly responded and had a set of M3v3 bookshelf speakers on their way. Why the M3v3? Well we often get folks asking about sub $1k bookshelf speakers on the forums. And thus of late I have been deep in the midst of the sub $1k bookshelf speaker jungle. And it is a jungle out there. But this is actually a good thing. It means we have a lot of great options to choose from. And before I make any more dumb jungle analogies, we should move on.

Aperion Audio Verus Grand Speaker System Review

The new Verus Grand Loudspeaker System from Aperion Audio is their attempt to produce the very best speakers they can for the least amount of money. I have to say, unequivocally, they’ve succeeded. The Verus Grand Towers image as good if not better than any speaker I’ve ever experienced. The Verus Grand Center is a joy to experience and makes a huge difference with listening to multichannel content. Our in-room and manufacturers measurements of the speakers are remarkably similar showing that not only has Aperion created a speaker that can measure well in a lab, but can do so in a real world environment. With Aperion’s free shipping (both ways) and 30 day in home audition, they are a risk free purchase. The Aperion Audio Verus Grand line has redefined, for me, value in high end speakers, which is why they earned the Audioholics coveted 2010 Product of the Year Award. Highly Recommended!

The Melody MK88, a Class A, KT88 integrated tube amplifier with a clean and no nonsense physical appearance is one of them. Yamaha RX-A3000 Receiver Review

AV receivers are constantly changing, constantly leap-frogging one another in features and capabilities. This year Yamaha announced its Aventage (RX-A) line and, in the process, jumped over a lot of the competition. And not a little jump, more like an Olympic gold medal long jump. Much of that jump is simply in the way of value – we mean the Aventage line in general has build quality and features that seem like it should cost a lot more than it does. The RX-A3000 takes that to the ‘nth’ degree. There are five receivers in the Aventage lineup and the RX-A3000 is the flagship. This 11.2 channel (140wpc x 7) A/V behemoth has endless configuration options, including dual independent subwoofer outputs, full power amp assignability, simultaneous usage of front effect and back channels, full 3D support, and HDMI Standby with switchable inputs even when the receiver is powered down. If you’re ready for the future, the RX-A3000 is ready to serve you in every capacity. It has proven itself to be a worthy and most importantly less costly successor to the venerable RX-Z7.

INEX Innovation Photon A200 Preamp, Photon Monoblock Power Amplifier and Photon Cables Review

Shared Review with Dagogo.com

By Doug Schroeder

It happens in the blink of an eye, in a flash, at the speed of light – the signal is sent, the music plays, and the ears are awash in waves of sound. The soul is stirred, and the mind feels… Free? Empowered? Thrilled?

What is it like to hear sound conveyed at the speed of light? While that may be difficult to report in terms of natural phenomena, I can report what signals sped through optic channels sound like. In this article we will trip the light fantastic, by investigating light-linked, nimble-toed components by INEX Innovation.

VTI VSP Monitor Speaker Stand Review

Let’s face it.  Who really wants to spend $500-$2000 on speaker stands?  I mean, all you need is a base with easy to adjust feet (if you don’t have a perfectly flat floor), an inert column that doesn’t radiate vibration sound waves, a good solid platform to put the speaker atop, and something that puts the tweeters at ear level in your listening seat.  It shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.  One shouldn’t have to buy $500 stands for $500 speakers. Hell a concern block would be good enough if the wife would let you have that in the living room.
